At Aoki Asunaro Construction, 10% of employees are foreign nationals.

The construction industry faces challenges of an aging workforce and labor shortages. This trend is more pronounced among mid-sized general contractors compared to super-sized ones.

Aoki Asunaro Construction, a mid-sized general contractor, is actively recruiting site supervisors and other personnel from Asia. The company employs approximately 1,000 people, and by fiscal year 2027, it expects 10% of its workforce—110 employees—to be foreign nationals. Among the 63 foreign employees working as “highly skilled professionals,” over half are Sri Lankans, recruited as new graduates from Sri Lanka's prestigious Morotowa University. The Sri Lankan government also encourages its citizens to work overseas, including in Japan.

The company's job offer recipients spend one year after graduation studying Japanese at local universities, achieving N2 proficiency. The company provides comprehensive support for all aspects of their life after arriving in Japan.

Working alongside highly motivated foreign colleagues has a positive impact on Japanese employees as well.

Sri Lanka is striving to recover from an economic crisis and is projected to produce one million skilled workers over the next decade. However, the domestic job market can only absorb 300,000 of them.

It would be ideal if Japan, facing labor shortages, and Sri Lanka, lacking employment opportunities for skilled workers, could build a mutually beneficial relationship.
