Permanent residency applications are becoming stricter.
The background for tightening permanent residency requirements is as follows:
* Increase in long-term stays and settlement by foreigners
* A trend demanding permanent residents fulfill responsibilities as members of Japanese society (tax payment, social insurance, etc.)
* Measures against non-payment of taxes and social insurance
* To prevent the de facto erosion of residence status
Key points where screening for permanent residency has become particularly stringent:
1. Stricter checks on public dues like taxes, health insurance, and pensions
If you paid your resident tax via the regular collection method but lost the receipt, request disclosure of personal information from the relevant government office(s). Obtain documents showing the payment date and due date, then submit them to the Immigration Bureau.
2. Strict scrutiny of family members' circumstances, not just the applicant's
Previously, only the applicant was reviewed; now family members are also subject to scrutiny.
3. Stricter enforcement of the ¥3 million annual income requirement
Previously, tax certificates for the last 4 years plus the most recent year's withholding tax slip sufficed. Going forward, tax certificates showing over ¥3 million in income for 5 consecutive years are expected to be required.
